...A long time ago

When Consuela Espinoza discovers that she will be cross-examining the man who deserted her twenty-five years ago in Uruguay at the height of the Falklands War, she is torn between her well-honed professional ethics and a visceral desire for revenge.

While she struggles with her primeval urge to punish Lt. Col. Christopher Martin (The Parachute Regiment (UK)) on the witness stand, what was supposed to be a routine libel suit explodes into a court room drama of international proportions when she discovers that her client is a former member of an intelligence unit responsible for multiple human rights violations. As the focus shifts to identifying the leader of the unit and its employers, Consuela is devastated to discover that her family has been directly involved in assisting the interrogation unit and several murderous dictatorships in Central and South America for the last twenty years. To further add to the combustible mix, she discovers that Chris was the leader of the British Army's Tisiphone unit assigned to tracking these faceless war criminals. Had he used her to assist his investigation? The question remains unanswered when she realizes that her children may now be threatened by the ensuing maelstrom of international intrigue and events that have invaded the Manhattan courtroom. In desperation, Consuela turns to the only man who can possibly help her - Lt. Col. Chris Martin. But can she trust him this time?

Demon Horde

Dagast is a grotesque monster of a man whose shoulders and neck seemed oversized, even on his six-foot plus frame. His arms were as thick as thighs and bristled with hair that appeared to spread out from his chest and back as if seeking a less crowded place to grow.
The outlaw chieftain is as ruthless as his appearance, never showing a hint of humor or compassion on his distorted face. He commands a band of cutthroats the provinces neighboring his lair in the Desfalan Mountains decry as a demon horde.
No one dared to challenge Dagast until the youthful son of a commander of a city guard, Algin Tamas, ventures into his lair and hatches a deadly plan to take the outlaw captive.

Fastian Vedal, brother to the earl of Klaran is marshaling an army to attack Montig. Lord Vado Redan beseeches his nephew and heir to assume control of Montig as lord protector. However, Dagar Redan vacillates. Although serving as commander of the palace guard, he is unwilling to command more than a brigade of guardsmen delegated the menial chore of escorting their minister of trade. Unwilling to assume the mantle of authority, he defers to his cousin, Tamas Lorang. Tamas issues the orders and, in truth, commands the guard.
Dagar continues in his malaise until Fate intercedes in the form of an old Ludrin hag. His demeanor changes abruptly when she presents him with a common quartz crystal. The stone elicits prophetic visions that haunt his sleep and Dagar becomes a driven man, obsessed with his dreams. He assumes control of the Montig forces and violently confronts the Klaran army, seeking to unify Calista in a single domain.

Sweet-heartS

This story is set in the idyllic Marlborough Sounds where a young mother of two leads a rather mundane life. Her delightful, but troubled daughters are struggling to get to grips with having been abandoned by their father. Through a strange twist of fate, the mother's plans for the day are disrupted and she meets a stranger who changes all their lives in ways they could never imagine. True love never runs smooth and for a while it looks like the affair is one sided, until a dark spectre from his past is revealed and dealt with. After that the whirlwind romance blossoms, and wedding bells peel, after what many fear is an indecently short affair, but time proves their love was built on a rock solid foundation.
The girl's new stepfather gives them all the love they crave and by introducing them to the joys of sailing, opens up new avenues of adventure for them. Initially their sailing is within the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, where they embark on a series of 'Swallows and Amazons' style adventures. A school lesson about the French nuclear testing at Moruroa angers the young admirers of nature's bounty, which they have quickly learned to appreciate and value. They are determined to try and do something about it. Despite the inevitable setbacks they do sail, not amidst the official protest fleet but under a cloud of secrecy. Eventually they are arrested along with the rest of the protesters and taken to an atoll, which serves as a military base. There the girls reveal the mischievous side of their persona, and create havoc for their capturers.
With appetites wetted by their first offshore cruise, the girls embark upon a futile search for another yacht, one in which they can fulfil their dream of sailing around the world. When all hopes of finding a suitable craft, seem to be exhausted, their dream-ship appears, and in their inimitable way they create a rift between the seller and his fiancee, but once she meets the impulsive duo she realises that her lover's dubious tales are indeed true.
The tale concludes with the parents becoming overdue on a coastal passage, during a storm, and the girls set sail in search of them, but a small broken teak hatch cover is all that is ever found, but from that meagre remnant, they manage to reconstruct their parent's final hours, much to the amazement of the search and rescue services.

Tar Babe's Quest

Sapphire was a typical 14-year old, downtrodden by an uncaring society, with no goals or ambitions. One day her father takes her for a days outing with a difference, but neither of them had any idea of the repercussions of what they were embarking on. Sapphire only accepted because the alternative was yet another day of boredom. That outing gave her a fleeting glimpse of a different lifestyle, more imagined than experienced, but one that she instantly knew she had to become a part of. That incurable disease, 'Sea Fever' had inflicted her, and consequently her fate was sealed. She tried to break into the elite circle of seafarers, but its members did not want to know her. An obviously under age girl, spelt trouble, and couldn't possibly have anything worthwhile to offer. There was one who was not so averse though, a despicable, bitter old sea dog, cut down by a stroke, prone to outbursts of frustration, who saw in her a reflection of his own youth. Eventually the barrier she had built around him, cracked a little, revealing a glimpse of what she was seeking, but never expected to find there, of all places. They were chalk and cheese, bound by a common love of the sea. He taught her the skills she needed, encouraged her impossible dream, and quietly laid the foundations that would ensure her aspiration would not just be possible, but would be her unavoidable destiny.
She learned, though was not knowingly taught, patience, dedication, humility, as well as seamanship, navigation, and skills hereto unimagined. She learned to chip away at seemingly impossible tasks, with calm quiet confidence until she achieved her goal, and to understand and meet the needs of fellow human beings. Despite the hard physical and mental toil required, she revelled in what she considered an idyllic lifestyle in which she found complete happiness, something few of us ever achieve. All this came to a shattering end, when not one but two tragedies struck, in quick succession, driving her to the brink of suicide. Only her strength of character, and her perceived responsibility to her mentor, pulled her through. She does achieve her goal, how could she not? Not only fulfilling her own dream, but by proxy that of her benefactor too. As a final twist, the supernatural brings an unexpected development to her life, and like all good fairytales, everyone lives happily ever after. In short, this is more a book of achievement, than a sad reflection on the life shattering results of stroke, and so it should be. Why dwell on suffering and misery, when we should be seeking and embracing what positive joy, we can in this sad world of ours?

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is an adventure story with a decidedly metaphysical crosscurrent. The writing is at its best when author, Richard Donald, is setting a scene. The opening at the rugby match is so well crafted I could almost smell the muddy turf, and hear the vertebra crunching. He is also adept (reminiscent of Ian Fleming or Tom Clancy) in identifying the military hardware that is used. Donald's sense of place is also exceptional and also helps the reader suspend disbelief in what is far outside the common experience. The script is devoid of humour, except for a couple of fat guy pratfalls, but this is no distraction in a movie about arms dealers, terrorists, religious fanatics, metaphysical abstraction and spiritual enlightenment. Whether a reader appreciates this story or not, he or she would surely acknowledge that Richard Donald has vast story telling talent. Webb Johnson, Reader (Edited)

THE CONFESSION

"Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned." "Would you care to confess your sins, my child?" "Yes, Your Eminence," the 90-year-old woman said in a gentle, nearly resigned voice. "When did you last attend confession?" She hesitated then whispered, "Sunday 17 July 1937 after the 10 o'clock mass with Father Bendetto. In this very confessional."

So begins Carmella Pinon's confession in rural Spain, a tale of love and war, and the terrible choices they can create.

The Mobius Twist

The Mobius Twist is speculative science fiction, with a plitico/social content, set in New Zealand.
During a kayaking holiday, on the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, a group of friends take shelter in an old tunnel. It proves to be ancient and disused, but they get a sense of recent occupancy. Subtle forces gide them to a strange vehicle, which delivers them to a site of low gravity. The moon? A small humanoid awaits them. A Zerkzes.

A mobius loop is an odd form, with less than normal dimensions. Could it contain a convenient means for travel between planets?
Were "the sons of God" mentioned in Genesis:6.2; extra-terrestrials bent on hastening human evolution, by genetic intervention?

The Mystery of the Solar Wind

“Yes, pirates,” agreed Federi with a dark grin.

The year is 21 16. Three Irish musicians who are fleeing from the sinister world government, the Unicate, board a trader, the Solar Wind.

But that’s where the trouble starts, because the Solar Wind is a pirate ship. Panama is a death trap, the narrow canal is watched by the Unicate along its whole length. How is the pirate hoping to escape? But not enough – on the way he sails his crew straight into a beleaguered Hamilton harbour, just to prove a point to the enemy.

Followed by bounty hunters, hounded by the Unicate and pursued by the Rebellion too, Radomir Lascek forges on, balanced precariously between his luck and skill, and the underworld…

Trouble - yes, Captain Radomir Lascek is trouble. But not half as much trouble as he has loaded on himself by hiring Shawn, Paean and Ronan Donegal, the three teen musicians who boarded in Dublin...

The Smuggler's Daughter

A small inconspicuous Baltic Trader gets wrecked on a remote part of the English south coast, but how did she drift so far from her course? This is the first of a number of mysteries peppering the pages of this book, which are in time unravelled. From this lacklustre beginning emerges a fascinating tale of love intrigue espionage and of course smuggling. When we talk of smugglers, its hardy fishermen, with rough salt hardened hands, and knurled weather-beaten faces marred by constant exposure to the elements, that we think of, and most of them were cast in that mould, but all those rugged souls were mere pawns in a clever chess game, directed by a sweet, dumpling of a girl, beautiful, feminine, soft spoken, but an amazingly competent sailor, whose skills at the helm of her beautiful always immaculate, yacht, quickly secured the admiration of all who encountered her.
The main thread of this story traces the all to short life and exploits of this bright, quick witted girl, who lived only to sail, an unheard of exploit for a young girl in the late 1800's. Perhaps it was her charm as much as her obvious proficiency as a sailor, that endeared her to all who encountered her, from the rough fishermen/smugglers to their dashing arch rivals - the revenue men, who could never have begun to imagine her true motives for befriending them.
This fascinating tale covers the lead up to, the foundation of, and the resurrection of, the clandestine "Association of Traders."
Tracing the all too short life and brutal seemingly pointless murder of its instigator, then proceeds to unravel another perplexing, mystery. Alongside this amazing biography, is the tale of the early efforts to introduce science into what at the time was the art of boat design. In short this fascinating historical document, is also a love story, incorporating a mystery or two, which despite its technicalities should find a wide audience, not just among the sailing fraternity, but, thanks to its included glossary, amongst the romantics and those looking for a tale with a difference.
