Have you heard of the tale of the end of the Age of Violence? A time when humanity stood on the brink of utter extinction by its own doing? Then come, listen, hear of an Age of savage heroes, and of treacherous villains. A time when demons walked the earth and the empires of men crumbled beneath the blood soaked sky, of an Age torn asunder by the majestic terror of the mushroom clouds. A time when noble monsters were born from polluted ashes while much worse came to rule the world. Let me tell you of the quest of the seven, seven survivors, judges, and executioners. Let me tell you of their many paths, all coming together in the end. Let me tell you of the salvation of the world. Let me tell you of the Reckoners. The year was 2052. |

The purpose of this book reminds me of Jonah, whose message of doom was not well received ... at first. Perhaps we should look around us and find the roots of this potential future so we can make it NOT happen?! Very well written. No, I am not a horror buff.

Well, having read the whole book in paper form (I work with the author) I have to say that the previous comment doesn't take into account anything beyond the prologue. From what the author uploaded as the free download, it also includes the first chapter of the book. You should understand that the prologue is not a completely accurate example of the whole work, both in the fact that the characters are not central and the style and even tense is not indicative of the rest of the book. I would recommend if you get bogged down in the prologue to go on to the actual text of the book, as it moves well beyond mere 'deranged musings' and into some well drawn prose and deep literary ruminations. Everyone might also remember that this is primarily a work of horror, and as such it is intended to disturb. Perhaps the skull on the cover with glowing mushroom clouds for eyes is not enough to announce this fact, but it should be a clear signal, not unlike the skull and crossbones on poisonous liquids, to use at your own risk.

The first chapter was an extremely pulpy novel of deranged musings.
It seemed that the focus was more on a display of sick fantasies rather than literary quality.
Is this a contest to see how twisted a human can think, or one of artistic skill?

This work shows true mastery in the art of storytelling. Neal grips you and holds you like a snake that bites and then coils around you until you simply MUST get to the end, until you MUST see what the outcome is. Excellent work - give us more!

Hi from Bookhabit - You can update your upload, as Adam has just done. The first chapter has been expanded to include more than the prologue.

This book kept me on my toes. I normally am not a horror, thriller genre type of reader, but this book made me want to keep reading. As I finish one chapter, I did not want to put it down. I am a theology/ethics student so I was intrigued by the book's element to evoke existential thought as well as keep the limbic portion of my intellect entertained. I would recommend it for those who just want a good read to add to their library for entertainment, and also for historians, ethicists, sci-fi geeks, and suspense lovers. Most importantly, I would advocate this reading to those who may be asking themselves: what the hell is going on in the world? Why are we so screwed up? What will happen to us if we, humans, keep living the way we do? YES! I would recommend it to those who are in search for something-understanding-have frustration about our existence, and want a challenge read to figure out the hidden meanings in the words and stories the book has to tell. Of course I would definitely also suggest it those who are reading for pleasure-who knows might get you thinking more than you already are and may take you to a place you've been searching for! Yeah, its long, but in the end, I gained.
Having read the few earlier comments on this author and his book, I would definitely say that this book is not for people with weak stomachs! However, for those of you like me who are queasy, once you work past through some of the gruesome sections, you get to the "real meat and bones" of a really good book. The book is about more than just the gore, just like at the end of really good horror movie you scream, yes! when they have ultimately said something about our humanity that you or you and your friends talk about or reflect on every now and again. Oh yeah, one chapter of the book does not do it justice, you have to learn the characters and get to know them, which the author introduces as the time comes. Definitely worth the $2.50.

Thanks for the honest responses so far, I appreciate them. In a certain sense, I feel that my motivation in creating the prologue, which was originally a short story that spawned so much more, was to create this sort of response, and so in that way I feel I've succeeded. However, I'm sorry that it was so appalling that it turned you away from reading on. I will try and upload the first chapter as well, but I don't think you can change much after it's been uploaded, so either way it is available on my blog: crimsonreckoning.blogspot.com, if you are interested in looking further than the prologue. Thanks to everyone whose responded and I welcome more responses :)

I was impressed with the slow acidic drip of the torture scene, although it definitely is more shocking than many people might be ready for. I think that it mainly would attract the more sadistic personality, or at least those who are drawn to the macabre and morbid. I've been reading this book on a blog and saw the link to come and vote, so here I am. This isn't a comment on the whole book because I haven't downloaded it, but it is on more than just the prologue. One thing to understand is that the prologue actually doesn't involve the main characters, but is intended to set the overall dark mood of the story while only actually involving an ancillary story arc that occurs midway through the novel. I will contact the author and see if he would add the first chapter in addition to the prologue, or if this is even possible at this point. If you want to take a look at more of the book, only like twelve chapters have been uploaded I think, then you can go here: crimsonreckoning.blogspot.com

The author did a great job of bringing the reality of torture to life. Great use of setting. I felt like I was there watching the whole thing. I want to keep this positive, but to be honest, it made me sick. I couldn't finish reading it. I may have survived the torture scence if I had been presented with a character that the author had made me care about. Was there a first chapter? All I could find was a prologue. I would really like to see the first chapter, because there might be potential in this story. You need to hook your reader, make them want more and this just didn't do it for me- sorry.

The violence seems slow and abstract, yet without real detail. Perhaps this parallels the reality of torture, but it make at least one reader uncomfortable.
